There is no perfect GPS

Like I always say, know your needs, buying an “all around gps” could be a mistake. Plus there is no GPS perfect for every purpose.

Weak documentation

DeLorme is known for putting out great GPS products. But you should budget time (after you have already budgeted money for your new toy) to learn this boy. It should perform well after you spend some hours getting used to it.

Hiking and Geocaching should be great purposes for you and your new DeLorme PN-40. You shouldn’t need to purchase additional maps if you are sticking to these activities.

This model probably won’t beat the Oregon, but it’s great for it’s price and purposes.

Mac Users beware. You might have a hard time getting this to work with your Mac.

The battery life is nothing special. Might be too weak for some users.

The Garmin eTrex Vista HCx is another great GPS from Garmin with decent software. Notice I said decent.

The software could be better

Garmin GPS systems are great for certain purposes, but not for all. You need to know your needs before you buy. The built in software should work well for most outdoor activities.

If you are hoping it will double as a great driving GPS, don’t think too fast.

You might have to spend more money with Garmin if you are looking to get more maps, etc. Garmin software can be spendy.

Highly sensitive

As the title suggests for this model, it’s highly sensitive. If that is what you need most, this GPS should work well.

If you are looking for a fantastic hiking GPS, why not check out the DeLorme Earthmate PN-40 Waterproof Hiking GPS? The PN-40 from Delorme is probably better equipped out of the box for hiking.

So like I said, know your purposes.

High sensitivity. Decent basemap. Portable and decent battery life.

The Garmin eTrex Venture HC is a great first model for those looking for adventure with a handheld GPS guide.

This model locks onto the satellites quickly to position you accurately. The screen is good.

Battery life is decent. Up to 14 hours, so it’s not overly impressive but it lasts longer than other models.

The build is solid and durable. Don’t worry about it on a rainy trek.

It works for Mac and PC users alike and is comfortable and intuitive to use. The thumb toggle on the front is easy to use and feels natural.

Accuracy is another great feature of this model. It’s responsive and positions you better than previous models.

Great model for geocaching.

Cons

The battery life is better with some other brands. The build-in basemap is not the most advanced and it’s not as useful as what comes with other GPS models.
